What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if kids start to go over the cliff – I mean if they are running and they do not look where they are going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That is all I would do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all” (173). This passage is the most well known passage in The Catcher in the Rye. It states the Holden’s desire to play the role of the savior of all children who are near of falling from the cliff, causing suffering in their lives. To conclude, one significant symbol of this book is the title itself, The Catcher in the Rye. It represented the duty of the protagonist as the protector and savior of all kids innocence.
J. D Salinger used literary devices to help us find the significance of the title. The allusion that Salinger gave turned to be more complicated symbolic object in novel but as the reader read through the novel he can figured it out the complete meaning of the title.
