D Salinger used the title of the novel to transmit the most important quality of Holden’s helpful persona toward kids by using an allusion to a Robert Burn’s poem, which reveals crucial information about the meaning of the title. The title The Catcher in the Rye is a symbol of the protagonist’s desire and dream to sustain the innocence of all kid. There are many reasons why people in a society perceive different meaning of the significance of the novel The Catcher in the Rye. First one is the malicious interpretation of the book.
Society acquires the unpleasant interpretation of this great book because of its obscene language, sexuality, and because it wasn’t appropriate for youth. Schools, libraries, and even families of teenager prohibited the kids reading this book because of those aspects. For example, “In my mind, I’m probably the biggest sex maniac you ever saw”(34). Society in that era was strict about their kids’ future and learning; however, some people do not understand why the title of the book was The Catcher in the Rye. They related Holden as a delinquent but his rebellious personality is a little fragment of what he really is. The real Holden is the one the titles says he is The Catcher in the Rye the one who wanted to saved the kid’s innocence, a hero of youth. In chapter sixteen when the kid sang the Robert Burn’s poem “If a body catch a body comin’ through the rye, “gives the first clue of where the title came from and some knowledge about it’s significance.
The child inspired Holden to become the catcher in the rye. Holden was confused about the real meaning of the poem, so Phoebe rectified his doubt by saying, “it’s if a body meet a body coming through the rye’! ” old Phoebe said. “It’s a poem by Robert Burns” (81). That moment when Phoebe is correcting Holden about a poem of Robert Burns presented us the first significance of the title. The title The Catcher in the Rye is a selfish symbol of Holden’s dream that he wanted to realize. Holden explains to Phoebe that he wanted to have the job of the catcher in the rye, to help a kids falling off the cliff. Holden admits, ” In addition, I am standing on the edge of some crazy cliff.
What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if kids start to go over the cliff – I mean if they are running and they do not look where they are going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That is all I would do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all” (173). This passage is the most well known passage in The Catcher in the Rye. It states the Holden’s desire to play the role of the savior of all children who are near of falling from the cliff, causing suffering in their lives. To conclude, one significant symbol of this book is the title itself, The Catcher in the Rye. It represented the duty of the protagonist as the protector and savior of all kids innocence.
J. D Salinger used literary devices to help us find the significance of the title. The allusion that Salinger gave turned to be more complicated symbolic object in novel but as the reader read through the novel he can figured it out the complete meaning of the title. Holden’s dream is absurd because for people in a society growing up is inevitable; no matter how hard you try you can’t escape yourself of maturity and becoming one with the society.
