American policing has been around for years and is extremely likely to be around for hundreds of generations to come. Very early policing and punishments could include public humiliation and even torture. Times have changed since the beginnings of police tactics now it is incredibly uncommon to see public humiliation due to a crime. American policing has changed multiple times over the past hundred plus years.
In most eyes the changes have been for the best of the policing system, trying to establish a concrete system. The policing system has developed overtime into a professional position, preventing crime, using the police officers as authority, and how this early system was adopted in the United States; Sir Robert Peel gets a major credit for this transformation of the police system. Sir Robert Peel was the man who convinced people that the police are a much needed force in every state and community. He took some ideas of others before him and transformed those ideas and principles into law.
With these new laws and the convincing the people the need for a strong police department Sir Robert Peel who was Britain’s Home Secretary, is recognized for the first development of policing. He was the leading man in the guidance of the early development of the police force. Sir Robert peel was not alone on this mission of policing. Sir Robert Peel Had two police commissioners, Charles Rowan and Richard Mayne, theses two men were Sir Robert Peel right hand in the founding of the London Police force. One of the first objections that they faced was the Public.
The people did not give any authority to the police officers; because of this Sir Robert Peel had to make the public believe in the police force. According to Miller, (1977) the legitimating of the London police was carefully orchestrated by Peel and his associates. Sir Robert and his associates transformed the department recognizing that if the public did not recognize the authority of the police then the overall department would fail. The police officers that went into the public had to meet certain qualifications. The officer had to act in a professional manner while in the public.
Theses officers were even tempered and did not lash out quickly with violence physically or verbally. These officers were trained to be a well-mannered, in control of oneself, and respectful officer. After gaining respect of the citizens Sir Robert Peels next major task was preventing crime and establishing authority. Preventing crime was the primary purpose for Sir Robert Peel and his associates. In order to prevent crime the London Metropolitan Police Act needed to be approved by parliament. In 1829 the act was passed and Sir Robert Peel took advantage of this.
This created a full time uniformed police agency that would patrol the city with the effort of preventing crime from happening. With the public now respecting officers and officers patrolling the streets that every citizen walked on the police officers eventually gained a form of authority in the public. This authority came with the training for the job and the citizens recognizing that the officer is there to help and prevent crime. United States development of a formal policing agency came from Sir Robert Peel and what the London Metropolitan Police have become.
The law enforcement in the United States developed in the early years of colonization. The colonies took what the English was doing and developed their own system very similar to theirs. “Towns and villages appointed constables and sheriffs with powers very similar to their English counterparts. ” (Grant & Terry, 2008) The sheriffs would help prevent crime here in the States. Another way to help prevent crime in the United States was organizing watch systems that originated in England as well. The founding of the Police system here in the United States came from the English roots.
In the United States citizens were also held liable for helping upholding peace in the early states. With police agencies enduring the test of time they will be here across the United States as well as in other countries. Sir Robert Peel and his associates receive a large amount of credit for forming the foundations of what police departs are founded on. Sir Roberts Peel’s principles of policing were and still hold today essential principles that countless officers must uphold. Sir Robert Peel had his officers trained not only in law but in matter of behavior and quality.
