Technology, it is used every day. As time goes by technology improves and there is more demand for it. But, does technology truly make us happy? Evidence in Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 and an article by Matt Richtel that was published in the New York Times supports that it does not. Modern technology does not make the people who use them truly happy because it prevents them from spending time with family, being social, and experiencing the world around them. Spending time with family is essential to happiness.
Most are unable to spend time with family because they are too consumed with the latest gear such as iPhones, Macs, and tablets. In Fahrenheit 451, open-minded, happy 17 year old girl who barely uses technology named Clarisse McClellan tells Guy Montag that “It’s just my mother and father and uncle sitting around, talking. It’s like being a pedestrian, only rarer. ” Its quote proves that that technology obstructs the ability for us to spend time and collaborate with family. Being social is key to a happy healthy life.
If one decides to stay home frequently and interact with their electronics instead of making plans to go out with friends, they are losing their capability to have social skills. According to an article in the New York Times, Julia Gray, 13, has been a heavy user of social media and the latest technologies such as laptops, iPods, and portable gaming devices. Her mother states “That Julia can have trouble picking up on subtle social cues in face-to-face interactions. ” With the inability to be social one might have a hard time in job interviews or simply meeting new people.
The use of technology does not allow one to venture away from the computer to discover the outside world around them. Clarisse McClellan from Fahrenheit 451 explains to Guy Montag that “The psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests and watch the birds and collect butterflies….. they want to know what I do with my time. I tell them that sometimes I just sit and think. But I won’t tell them what. I’ve got them running. And sometimes, I tell them I like to put my head back, like this, and let the rain fall in my mouth. Clarisse is able to enjoy the beautiful aspects of life because she is not engaging with all the new gadgets and gizmos that others are. But the fact is that she is more happy than them. The use of modern devices such as iPhones and computers do not make the operator of the devices happy because it enables them to be able to spend time with family, be socially active, or experience the exquisite world around them. This can be proven by quotes from Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 and by the article in the New York Times by Matt Richtel. Everyone uses technology, but not everyone has to let it take away their happiness.
